Allen KnowsHisGun, is a Crow Indian Artist who works with oils, acrylics, and other mediums to express his vision of American Indian culture. He grew up on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. His Crow Indian name is “Baawachesh Xuuchesh,” which translates to “Helps the Needy.”

 

After graduating from Hardin High School in Montana, he then attended Haskell Indian Nations University where he competed in NAIA collegiate basketball. There he graduated with a B.A. in American Indian Studies, afterward he attended the University of Kansas and earned his M.A. in Indigenous Nations Studies. Along with his pursuit of education and sports, he also consistently pursued his aspirations in the arts, always continuing his production and development as a fine artist.

 

After graduate school, Allen returned home to teach American Indian Studies. First teaching at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, MT, while also from time to time at Little Big Horn College in Crow Agency, MT. Along with teaching, he steadily continues his career as a prolific artist.

 

Much of his work reflects his Crow heritage along with other Plains Indian cultures. His depiction of American Indian people and traditional life is from historical times to the present. Careful research is evident in his work, with the authentic portrayal of regalia and scenery. His work reflects the genres of romantic realism/impressionism. Brilliant colors with bold light & shadow, have become signatures in his elegant style of work.
